We might not have to deal with altitude in Atlanta, but we have to deal with humidity, which is just as hard. Not only does humidity make it almost impossible to ever cool down, it makes it hard to breathe and gets sweat stinging your eyes almost as soon as you step out the door. It can be difficult to think about walking to the mailbox and back, much less working out! There are many air-conditioned solutions to the heat, including our facility. Sometimes, life is so crazy, you can’t make it to Thrive Fitness. Other times, you just need a run that isn’t on a treadmill. Whatever your reason for working out in the great outdoors, we understand. We just want to make sure you do it safely!

In our last blog, we discussed the importance of staying tuned in to the weather and wearing light clothing. Today, we have a couple more valuable tips.

Hydrate!dreamstime_xxl_56911010

You’ve probably been told to hydrate since you were in gym class. Well, it’s still the most important thing you can do when you lead an active lifestyle. It becomes absolutely crucial when you work out in hot, humid conditions. If you don’t give yourself proper hydration, you run the risk of heat stroke. Drink about two glasses before you head out and the same amount when you return. If you can, hydrate every 15 minutes during your workout.

Listen to your body

When you’re headed into a hard workout, you’re ready to ignore your body’s complaints. Discomfort is involved in progress. However, there is a point where you’ve taken things too far. Don’t ignore nausea or dizziness. These are the two main ways your body will shout at you that you’ve crossed the line into destructive territory.
